This 6 minute video is sponsored by the European Nutrition for Health Alliance, the European Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and the Medical Nutrition International Industries. It came from the Nestle Nutrition Institute website.
This video is based on a study focusing on the relationship between malnutrition and disease that was carried out on 50,000 EU hospital and elderly care patients--that was the focus population. There were several interesting conclusions and points:
- malnutrition can be due to not enough food, but also to poor digestion and/or poor absorption of nutritients
- less than 40% of patients actually eat all of what they are given
- under nourishment leads to compromised immune systems (infections, low resistance to hospital diseases, poor wound healing)
- food is often a cure and at the least represents prevention
- 1/3rd of hospital patients are malnourished
- this results in longer hospital stays and the need for increased care
- in the UK alone, the extra costs are estimated at GBP 10 billion per annum
